NEW YEAR BLESSING

Saints Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar

These three Persian ‘wise men’ witnessed an extraordinary star and set out on a 1,000-mile journey.  When they arrived at the star set above a newborn in a manger, they prostrated themselves to the child bearing him gifts of incense for God, gold for King and myrrh for death for our sake.

It is an ancient Carmelite tradition to bless one’s house on the Feast of the Three Kings by writing with chalk above the home’s entrance this formula:

+ 20 C M B 18 +

The three initials stand for the Magi.  The + symbolizes the cross then the new year 2018.

A prayer is offered ‘Bless this house, all who live here and all who visit.’

May this tradition bless your household accordingly
