‘The Dream of Saint Joseph’
This moving scene of Joseph and Mary was painted in 1642 by the French Baroque painter Philippe de Champaigne. Worthy yet rare is a discussion of Joseph as “Mary’s husband known to be a “righteous man” recounting the Christmas story in Matthews 2:18-24.
“Behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.”
“When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.”
Thus began Joseph’s commitment to protect Mary and her child as they journeyed to Bethlehem and beyond. As a mighty guardian, we can imitate Joseph’s boundless faith in God to fulfill the duties of our state in life.
Prayer to Saint Joseph
O, Saint Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong,
so prompt before the throne of God,
I place in you all my interests and desires.
Saint Joseph, pray for us, Amen
