EYES TO BEHOLD

Artful Writing

The Cathedral of Chartres, France

When I first stepped into this Gothic cathedral, I felt so insignificant compared to the high nave above the exquisite altar.  I imagined how those Medieval peasant folk, who mostly could not read,  must have felt looking up to the stories of Holy Scripture etched in the glass panes.

These famous stained glass windows focus mainly on the Prophet Isaiah in Chapter 11:1-10 telling how “On that day, a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse (father of King David) and from his roots a bud shall blossom…on that day, the root of Jesse (the Messiah) set up as a signal for the nations.”  “Justice shall flourish in his time and fullness of peace for ever (Psalm 72).”  The Advent to Christmas story is memorialized.

“Stained glass windows through which the clarity of the sun is transmitted signify the Holy Scripture which banish evil from us and enlighten our being.”

Bishop of Durand de Mende

There is power in stained glass windows such as these…in place since the 12th Century.

Today’s  Advent recalls the promise of the “mountain of the Lord” where “the wolf and the lamb shall graze alike, and the lion shall eat hay like the ox (but the serpent’s food shall be dust.)  None shall hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain, says the Lord.”

Isaiah 65:25

…in thanksgiving for daily blessings…
