ODE TO ANCESTORS

Trail of the Ancestors by Jan Oliver Schultz

Short Story

WHAT ATTRACTS ME TO THIS PIECE OF ART IS THE COUPLE ON HORSEBACK IN THE KALEIDOSCOPE OF COLORED BIRCH FOREST THEY ARE TRAVERSING…AND I’M FOLLOWING JOHN AS HE LEADS ME INTO THE SUNNY LIGHT AHEAD OF US.  NO DOUBT, I CAN FOLLOW HIM EVEN TO TIMBUKTU AND AS WE RIDE FORWARD WE ALWAYS CONTEMPLATE WHERE WE HAVE ORIGINATED FROM.

ACCORDING TO OUR FAMILY HISTORIES, JOHN’S ROOTS CAME FROM AFRICA TO SETTLING IN SOUTHWEST GEORGIA.  MY ANCESTORS CAME FROM ENGLAND, SCOTLAND, FRANCE AND GERMANY…MAKING US A GOOD MELTING POT.

JOHN’S ANCESTORS WERE LARGE LABORING FAMILIES LIVING OFF THE LAND WHILE MINE WERE EUROPEAN EMIGRANT BLUE COLLAR WORKERS ALSO WITH LARGE FAMILIES.  MANY WERE VALIANT SOLDIERS AND MERCHANTS.

WHAT COMFORTS US ABOUT OUR ANCESTORS IS THEIR LOVE FOR GOD AND FAMILY LIFE, ALWAYS HARD WORKING AND STRIVING TO DO GOOD.  THAT IS THE PATH JOHN AND I HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO FOLLOW, AND WE ARE VERY GRATEFUL THEY HAVE GIVEN US THIS BENEVOLENT EXAMPLE.

LIKE RIDING TOUGH ON HORSEBACK, WE HOLD TIGHTLY TO THE REINS.  WE OCCASIONALLY LOOK OVER OUR SHOULDERS AND TAKE STOCK OF OUR PAST TRAILS, BUT MOVING FORWARD IS BEST BECAUSE AT THE END OF OUR BRIGHT JOURNEY, OUR ANCESTORS WILL BE GREETING US WITH APPLAUSE AND WE WILL BE ABLE TO THANK THEM FOR THEIR LOVING GUIDANCE.
